Motor skill learning by increasing the movement planning horizon

چکیده
Motor skill is usually understood as a capability to perform faster and more accurate movements than other, unskilled, individuals. In this study we investigated motor skill learning using a path tracking task, where subjects had to track various curved paths as fast as possible, in the absence of any external perturbations. We found that subjects become better with practice, producing faster and smoother movements even when tracking novel untrained paths. Using a “searchlight” paradigm, where only a short segment of the path ahead of the cursor was shown, we found that subjects with a higher tracking skill demonstrated larger planning horizon, i.e. took a longer chunk of the future path into account when computing the control policy for the upcoming movement segment. This suggests that the motor system uses receding horizon control, and its horizon length can increase with practice, resulting in an increased accuracy of the movement controller.

Motor Learning and Movement Performance: Older versus Younger Adults
Introduction: Motor skills play an important role during life span, and older adults need to learn or relearn these skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate how aging affects induction of improved movement performance by motor training. Methods: Serial Reaction Time Test (SRTT) was used to assess movement performance during 8 blocks of motor training. Participants were tested i...
متن کاملDifferences in cortical activity related to motor planning between experienced guitarists and non-musicians during guitar playing.
The influence of motor skill learning on movement-related brain activity was investigated using electroencephalography. Previous research has indicated that experienced performers display movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) of smaller amplitude and later onset compared to novices. Unfortunately, previous studies have lacked ecological validity with experimenters recording the MRCP prio...
متن کاملExplicit knowledge enhances motor vigor and performance: motivation versus practice in sequence tasks.
Motor skill learning involves a practice-induced improvement in the speed and/or accuracy of a discrete movement. It is often thought that paradigms involving repetitive practice of discrete movements performed in a fixed sequence result in a further enhancement of skill beyond practice of the individual movements in a random order. Sequence-specific performance improvements could, however, ari...
متن کاملWhat Autocorrelation Tells Us about Motor Variability: Insights from Dart Throwing
In sports such as golf and darts it is important that one can produce ballistic movements of an object towards a goal location with as little variability as possible. A factor that influences this variability is the extent to which motor planning is updated from movement to movement based on observed errors. Previous work has shown that for reaching movements, our motor system uses the learning...
متن کاملReduced Motor Cortex Activity during Movement Preparation following a Period of Motor Skill Practice
Experts in a skill produce movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) of smaller amplitude and later onset than novices. This may indicate that, following long-term training, experts require less effort to plan motor skill performance. However, no longitudinal evidence exists to support this claim. To address this, EEG was used to study the effect of motor skill training on cortical activity ...
